WINNING WORDS: YOUNG SCRIBES IMPRESS JUDGES IN NEW WRITING CONTEST

A spiring writers were given the chance to put pen to paper on a variety of topics from animals to tourism – with a host of high-tech goodies up for the grabs for the winners. More than 40 local schoolchildren aged from six to 17 took part in the inaugural edition of a new writing challenge presented by the Ministry of Education and sponsored by big-hearted Brit Cheryll Rogers, founder of philanthropic organisation Unicorn Collective. Youngsters could submit their entries in prose, poetry, essay or song, based on one of

five subjects. They were ‘what would make the world a better place for all inhabitants’; ‘what it means to be Antiguan and Barbudan’; ‘man’s responsibility to animals’; ‘what can be done to make Antigua and Barbuda a more attractive tourist destination’; and ‘five things that make me smile’. There were three age categories with specific word counts for each. Entries were judged by Rogers, along with education officer Desryn Collins and acclaimed local author Brenda Lee Browne. Prizes included a laptop, tablets, Kindles and

smartwatches – plus seeing their work published in Luxury Locations Magazine. The presentation ceremony was held at the Weatherills hotel in Cedar Grove which hosted a three-course lunch for the occasion. We present the winners on the following pages. The second edition of the competition was launched in May and entrants have until October to submit an original piece of work. Email desryn.collins@ab.gov.ag for more details.
